PLEDGES

At The Harbour School, learning outside the classroom is a vital part of how we support pupils to thrive. In line with Meridian Trust’s commitment to high-quality Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC), we believe that meaningful learning happens everywhere – not just within four walls.

Our beautiful grounds and specialist facilities provide a rich, flexible learning environment that meets the social, emotional and behavioural needs of our pupils. From our outdoor classroom and extensive green spaces to the gym, swimming pool and astro turf, pupils are given regular opportunities to learn through movement, exploration and real-life experiences.

Learning outside the classroom supports regulation, wellbeing and engagement. It helps pupils build confidence, resilience and positive relationships, while offering practical, hands-on experiences that make learning feel purposeful and accessible. For many of our pupils, outdoor and physical learning reduces anxiety, supports emotional regulation and creates the conditions they need to succeed.

We strengthen this approach through Meridian Trust initiatives such as 99 Things to Do Before You Are 15¾ and our Pledges programme, which are tailored to meet the needs of our pupils and ensure they experience a broad range of enriching, memorable opportunities. These programmes encourage curiosity, independence and aspiration.

Educational visits and trips are highly valued, including visits to the theatre, physical activity centres and community settings. These experiences broaden horizons, develop social skills and enable pupils to apply their learning in real-world contexts, supporting both personal development and academic progress.

By embedding Learning Outside the Classroom across our curriculum, we enable pupils to reconnect with learning, develop independence and experience success in ways that play to their strengths. This reflects our belief that high aspirations, inclusive practice and enriching environments are key to improving outcomes for every child.
